Research Subject

In this research, we focus on non-equilibrium fluctuations in growing interfaces and non-equilibrium phase transitions aiming to uncover universal properties of fluctuations and structures with use of the latest theory in statistical mechanics and precise measurement technology. To achieve that end we elucidate physical mechanisms of non-equilibrium phenomena in small systems where fluctuations strongly correlate with structural deformation and translational motions, search for statistical laws of fluctuations in growing interfaces, and try to verify non-equilibrium phase transition scenario for the onset of shear flow turbulence. To be specific, we make use of turbulent interfaces in liquid crystals for studying the universality in random growing interfaces, colloids and other soft matter for realizing experimental systems of self-propelling active matter. With the united efforts of theory and experiment we will unravel the role of fluctuations and explore the universal laws in non-equilibrium systems.
