Researcu SubjectA Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of neutral atoms is a meso-scale quantum system in which typically 106 atoms, a very few number compared to the Avogadro number, are confined in a macro-scale volume such as 104 m3, and cooled down to an ultralow temperature of about 100 nK. In this Research Projects, we view the multicomponent BEC as a nonequilibrium system, and will observe dynamics of nonequilibrium structures to deepen the physical understanding of the order formations. In an atomic BEC, we can dynamically and precisely control the temperature, external forces, and even the interaction strength between atoms, and an optical imaging technique enables realtime observation of its dynamics. In addition, we can quantitatively predict many of the phenomena by numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and this will allow detailed understanding of the dynamics of nonequilibrium structures. |
