Research Subject

We study non-equilibrium fluctuations in multi-degree-of-freedom systems and continuous systems. Specifically, we target soft materials such as dense colloids, liquid crystals with a fluctuating director, and biomatter including actin solutions. Non-Equilibrium steady states of soft matter are mainly generated by applying steady shear strain. Soft matter is literally soft, and as such is suitable for measuring fluctuations and responses to perturbing external forces. The results may be useful for understanding rheological properties. However, commercially available equipment is often useless for measurements on soft matter in non-equilibrium states. Therefore, in this study we develop a new apparatus suitable for such measurements and elucidate the individual and universal features of steady non-equilibrium fluctuations in soft matter.
