概要: 「バクテリア」は、もっとも単純な生命体の1つであり、大きさは1ミリの1000分の1程しかありません。ところが、動く仕組みに注目すると、実に多様で複雑な様式を発達させていることが知られています。本研究では、光合成微生物のラン藻が、細い糸のような繊維状構造物を持ち、その伸長収縮を繰り返す様子を撮影することに成功しました。さらに、独自の光学顕微鏡を駆使することで、この生命体は、指向性のある光という外部シグナルによって、その運動を制御する能力を持つことを明らかにすることができました。これは「視覚を備えたバクテリア」という点でも画期的です。光を感知するだけでなく、光の向きを認識するという事実は、単純な生命体が、高度な情報処理を達成していることをあらわしています。スパイダーマンのようなバクテリアは、非常に単純ではあるが初歩的な視覚を備えることで、自身の持つ「糸」を伸縮させる方向を自由自在に制御していると考えられます。
